In a continued effort to enhance health and wellbeing in the region, Mercy Health is pleased to announce a merger between the Mercy Health Foundation Greater Toledo and the former St. Luke’s Foundation.

Together, the foundations will continue to serve the community by supporting health care needs such as innovation and technology, educational opportunities, as well as training and community programs. As part of the merger, the Mercy Health Foundation will accept gifts into the St. Luke’s Hospital Legacy Fund, which will be used to continue to boost health and wellness services within the region of Lucas, Wood, Fulton, Henry, and Defiance counties that had been the St. Luke’s Hospital service area.

Additionally, three St. Luke’s Foundation board members have been welcomed on the Mercy Health Foundation Greater Toledo Board.

“The Mercy Health Foundation Greater Toledo is committed to honoring St. Luke’s legacy and donors’ intent by supporting initiatives for the health and wellness of the community once served by St. Luke’s Hospital,” said Tim Koder, president, Bon Secours Mercy Health Foundation, noting that the Ohio Attorney General and Lucas County Probate Court reviewed and approved these constraints. “We are excited to not only carry on St. Luke’s heritage but also to welcome members of their foundation board into the Mercy Health Foundation family.”

In March 2023, McLaren St. Luke’s announced the decision to close the hospital and related outpatient services. At that time, McLaren and Mercy Health announced an asset purchase agreement in which Mercy Health acquired the McLaren St. Luke’s facilities, land and physical assets. Additionally, Mercy Health offered employment opportunities to St. Luke’s providers and staff.

Since the announcement, Mercy Health has welcomed 22 former McLaren St. Luke’s providers and about 400 team members, including nurses, technicians, and therapists, among others. Merging the foundations of the two organizations is another step in that transition.

The McLaren St Luke's Foundation was formed in 1979 and was dedicated to securing resources for St. Luke's Hospital's charitable mission of healing and serving its community. New and existing gifts into the BSMH Foundation’s St. Luke’s Hospital Legacy Fund will continue to support the latest medical technology, the most skilled health care, comfortable and updated hospitals and care environments, and outreach services that improve the health of our communities.

“We were seeking a partner that would honor the 45-year heritage of St. Luke’s Foundation and keep the wishes and values of our donors at the forefront,” said Rhonda Wise, former St. Luke’s Foundation board chairman, who transitioned to join the board at Mercy Health Foundation. “We are confident that the Mercy Health Foundation will carry forth our legacy by investing our donors’ generosity in the wellbeing of residents across St. Luke’s five-county service area.”
